MEMORANDUM
TO: Animal Users, College of Arts and Sciences (CAS)
FROM: W. L. Shelton, LAR Director
SUBJECT: Animal Per-Diem Rate Change (Subsidized and non-subsidized)
DATE: 28 April 2008
This memorandum is to notify you of changes in the rate structure for animal care. We have not modified rates for animal care since 2002,
but because of significant increases in costs of expendables (feed, bedding, and cleaning supplies), we must add an increment to the daily rate
structure in order to maintain our cost recovery. The increase is minimal and will take effect in August 2008. However, you will note another
major change in the posted rates; we have had to develop a rate structure to recover the actual expenses for animal care, which includes
personnel and other operating costs. This Per Diem structure will not be directly applicable to CAS personnel because the college has
financially supported the Animal Care Program for the past several decades; the posted Per Diem rate is subsidized for animal users in the
college as indicated in Table 1. Thus, the rate billed to CAS animal users, though slightly higher than previously, will be at the subsidized
rate. Non-CAS investigators will be required to pay the actual costs for providing animal care (Table 2).
